Lord Satyanarayan, Shri Hari is considered to be the true form of Vishnu. This fast can be observed with devotion on any auspicious day including Purnima, but it is especially observed on Purnima, marriage, housewarming, fulfillment of resolution and fulfillment of wishes. The basic message of this fast is that man should follow truth, faith, promise and honor the offerings.

At the beginning of the story, Devarshi Narad, seeing the suffering of the living beings in the world, asks Lord Vishnu for a solution. Then Lord Satyanarayan explains the rules of fasting. Further in the story, incidents like poor Brahmin, woodcutter, Vaishya-good householder, his wife Lilavati and daughter Kalavati etc. come up. One who fasts with devotion, his poverty, obstacles and sorrows are removed; One who forgets a resolution or disrespects the Prasad, has to suffer, but ultimately God forgives and blesses.

Poojana mein kalasha, panchaamrita, tulasi, panchaphala, naivedya, gehoon yaa sooji ka shiraa/halavaa, kela aur prasaada ka vishesha mahatva hai. Bhagavaana satyanaaraayana ki puja ke baada katha shravana, aarti aur prasaada vitarana kiya jaata hai. Parivaara sahita yaha vrata karne se ghar mein shaanti, samriddhi aur saubhaagya badhata hai.

The essence of this story is that never deviate from the truth, do not forget the resolution made to God, do not disrespect the prasad and worship and accept the blessings of Shri Hari in every work.
