When an additional month comes to balance the lunar month and the solar month, then it is called Adhik Maas. Lord Vishnu gave this neglected month his name and made it Purushottam month. For this reason, this month is considered especially auspicious for worshiping Shri Hari, chanting, donating, telling stories, reciting Geeta, donating lamps and fasting.
According to the story, Adhik month was despised by other months considering it inferior. Feeling sad, he took refuge in Lord Vishnu. Then Shri Hari out of compassion gave him his best name “Purushottam” and said that whoever does fasting, devotion, charity, stories and good deeds in this month will get many times the virtue. Since then, this month is considered a special time for spiritual practice, atonement and resolution.
In Purushottam month, morning bath, Vishnu Sahasranama, recitation of Geeta, service of Tulsi, charity, celibacy, satvik diet and remembrance of Harinam have great importance. This fast disciplines life and is considered an expiation of past sins.
