Dharmaraj Yudhishthir asked Lord Shri Krishna - "O Janardan! You have described the Ekadashis of Phalgun and Chaitra month, now please tell how Ekadashi originated? Why is this date so dear to the gods and what is its significance?"
Lord Shri Krishna said - "O son of Kunti! You have asked a very good question. The story of the origin of Ekadashi is related to Satyayuga. Listen carefully."
1. Terror of the demon named Mur
In Satyayuga, there was a very powerful and terrible demon named 'Mur'. With his power he defeated all the gods including Indra, Varun, Yama and Agni and became the king of heaven himself. The defeated gods, saddened, reached Lord Vishnu in Ksheer Sagar and requested for protection.
Indradev prayed - "O Lord! The demon named Mur has driven us out of heaven. He is also harassing the sages and humans. Please kill that demon."
2. Fierce battle between Lord Vishnu and Mur
Hearing the call of the gods, Lord Vishnu reached the battlefield riding on Garuda. There was a fierce war between Lord Vishnu and the demon Mur for thousands of years. Lord destroyed the huge army of demons with his Sudarshan Chakra and arrows, but the demon Mur was not being defeated due to his illusory powers.
Thousands of years passed in the war and Lord Vishnu started feeling tired. After truce, he went to Badarika Ashram (Badrinath) and started resting therein a cave named 'Hemvati'. The Lord became absorbed in Yoga Nidra there.
3. Appearance of Ekadashi Devi and killing of Mur
The demon Mur chased the Lord and reached the same cave. He saw that Lord Vishnu was sleeping. He thought that this was the right opportunity to kill God. As soon as Mur raised the sword on the Lord, an extremely divine, radiant and armed goddess appeared from the Lord's body.
That goddess was extremely powerful. He fought with the demon Mur and made him unconscious with a single roar. When Mur rose again, the goddess killed him by cutting off his head.
4. The boon of Lord Vishnu and the name 'Ekadashi'
When Lord Vishnu woke up from his sleep, he saw that the demon Mur was lying dead and a stunning goddess was standing. God asked - "O Goddess! Who are you and who killed this demon?"
The goddess replied, "O Lord! I am your own Shakti (Yogamaya). When this demon was about to attack you, I appeared from your body and killed him."
Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased and said - "O Goddess! Since you have appeared on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the month of Margashirsha, from today onwards your name will be'Ekadashi'. You will be my favorite Shakti and the person who observes your fast on this day, his sins of many births will be destroyed and he will finally attain salvation."
