Dharmaraj Yudhishthir asked - "O Janardan! You did me good by telling me the greatness of 'Parama Ekadashi' of Krishna Paksha of Adhik month. Now please tell me about the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Adhik month. What is its name and what is its method?"

Lord Shri Krishna said - "O son of Pandu! The name of this Ekadashiis 'Padmini Ekadashi'. This fast is very rare and gives happiness as well as salvation to children. Its story is related to Tretayuga. Listen carefully."

1. Concern of King Kritavirya

In Tretayuga, in Haihaya dynastya very glorious king named Kritaviryaruled. He had many queens, but he did not beget a child from any of them. Without children, the king found his vast empire and royal splendor bleak. He was always thinking about who would take his dynasty forward.

2. The king and the queen went to the forest

Santaana ki ichchha se raaja kritaveerya ne apana raaja-kaaja mantriyon ko saunpa diya aur apni priya raaniwith Padminito do penance in the forest. He performed severe penance on Mount Gandhamadan for thousands of years, but his wish was not fulfilled. His body became weak, but he did not get any results.

3. Divine Counsel of Sati Anusuya

When Queen Padmini saw that the king's penance was not succeeding, she approached Sati Anusuya (wife of Maharishi Atri). The queen prayed - "O Mother! We have been doing penance for thousands of years for the happiness of our children, yet we have not succeeded. Please tell us a path that will please the Lord."

Sati Anusuya looked at him with divine vision and said - "O Queen! After 32 months there comes an'Adhik Maas'in which the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha falls.is 'Padmini Ekadashi'says. If you and the king will observe this fast properly, then Lord Vishnu will definitely be pleased and will bless you with a brave son."

4. Padmini Ekadashi fast and vigil

Queen Padmini observed a fast on Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Adhik month as per the instructions of Sati Anusuya and kept vigil throughout the night chanting the hymns of Lord Vishnu. King Kritavirya also observed this difficult fast with her.

5. Lord Vishnu. Appearance and boon

Due to the effect of fasting, Lord Vishnu appeared riding on Garuda. Seeing the loyalty of the king and queen, he said – “O king! I am very happy with you. Your wife has observed a good fast on Padmini Ekadashi, so ask for the boon as per your wish."

The king folded his hands and said - "O Lord! Grant me such a son who is invincible in all the three worlds, who is not defeated even by the gods and demons and no one else can conquer him except you." Lord Vishnu said 'Amen' and vanished.

6. Birth of the thousand-armed Kartavirya Arjun

When the time came, a very brilliant son was born from the womb of Queen Padmini, who later onbecame famous by the name of Kartavirya Arjun (Sahsrabahu)He was so powerful that he captured even the great warrior Ravana.
