॥ Shri Nag Panchami fast story. 🐍🕉️

॥ mythology .

Once upon a time, a pious farmer lived with his family in a city. He had two sons and a daughter. That farmer was very hard-working, but unknowingly he committed a big crime.

It was the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. According to the scriptures, digging or plowing the earth is prohibited on this day, but the farmer, out of ignorance, went to plow the field with his oxen. While plowing the field, suddenly the tip of the farmer's plow entered the hole of a snake. Three small children of the serpent (Sapele) were sleeping in that hole. Due to the sharp blow of the plough, all three children were cut and died instantly.

When the serpent returned to her hole, her heart was filled with grief and anger after seeing her children bleeding and dead. He saw that there were plow marks in the field nearby. The serpent understood that this farmer had killed her children. He decided to take revenge.

That very night, when the farmer, his wife and his two sons were sleeping deeply, the serpent entered their house and bit all four of them one by one. The farmer, his wife and both sons died instantly due to the effects of poison.

The next morning, the serpent reached the farmer's daughter to bite her. There he saw a wonderful sight. That girl was fasting on Nag Panchami. He had carved the figure of a snake god on the wall with coal and ocher. She was offering raw milk, paddy slag (kheel), flowers and sandalwood with a pure heart for the worship of snakes. The girl was praying with folded hands to the snake god for the happiness and prosperity of her family and asking for forgiveness for the sins she had committed unknowingly.

Seeing this exclusive devotion and compassionate worship of the girl, the serpent's anger subsided. He realized that this girl was innocent and devoted. The serpent appeared in person and said to the girl, "O daughter! Your devotion has pleased me. You can ask for any boon."

The girl prayed with great humility, "O Mother! If you are pleased with me, please give life back to my dead parents and brothers."

The serpent said 'Tathaastu' and offered nectar to the girl. With the touch of that nectar the farmer and his entire family came back to life. While leaving, the serpent gave a boon that whoever worships the serpents as per the rituals on Shravan Shukla Panchami and does not plow the land on this day, he and his family will never be troubled by the fear of snakes for seven generations. Since then, the tradition of worshiping snakes and listening to this fast story on the day of Nag Panchami has been going on.
