🌹 Importance of fasting

Mahashivratri fast is very dear to Lord Shiva. By fasting and worshiping as per the rituals on this day, all sins are destroyed and salvation is attained.
According to Shivpuran, by worshiping Lord Shiva on this day, the sins of many births are destroyed.

📖 Mythology

It was a matter of ancient times, in a citythere lived a hunter named Chitrabhanu. He used to support his family by hunting animals and birds in the forest.

Chitrabhanu was of extremely harsh nature, and his life was full of violence. He would roam around in the forest all day long, hunting animals and earning his living from that.

One day the holy festival of Mahashivratri came. That day also Chitrabhanu set out towards the forest in search of hunting.

Even after trying the whole day, he could not find any prey. It was evening and he got tired and sat down on a tree near a pond, so that he could hunt the animals that come at night.

The tree on which he was sittingwas a Bael treeand under the same tree there was aShivalinga installed, about which he had no knowledge.

🌙 First hour of the night

The first hour of the night passed. At the same time a deer came there to drink water.
Chitrabhanu picked up the bow to kill him.

Then the deer said -
👉 "O hunter! I am pregnant. Let me go, I will give birth to my children and then return to you."

Chitrabhanu took pity on him and let him go.

During this time, while pulling the bow, he unknowingly dropped someBel leaveswhich fell directly on Shivalinga.

👉 In this way hisfirst Prahar Shiva pujawas done.

🌙 Second phase

After some time the second deer came.
Chitrabhanu then tried to kill him.

Hirani said –
👉 “Let me go, I will return after giving a message to my husband.”

Chitrabhanu let him go too.

This time too, Bel leaves fell from his hand and climbed on Shivalinga.

👉 In this way the second Prahar also changed into Shiva worship.

🌙 Third Prahar

In the third prahar a deer (male) came.
Chitrabhanu tried to kill him too.

The deer said –
👉 “I have come to search for my wives, after meeting them I will myself return to you.”

Chitrabhanu left him too.

Again the Bel leaves fell on Shivalinga.

👉 In this way the third hour was also spent in worship.

🌙 Fourth Prahar

In the last Prahar, the same deer returned with his entire family.
They all stood in front of the hunter and said –

👉 “Now you can kill us, we have kept our promise.”

Seeing this, Chitrabhanu's heart changed.
He thought –

👉 “These animals are also so true to their word, and I, despite being a human being, am so strict.”

His heart was filled with compassion and he released all the deer.

🔱 By the grace of Lord Shiva

He remained hungry and thirsty the whole night (fasting)
He remained awake the whole night (jagran)
and unknowingly kept offering Belpatra (worship)

👉 In this way, the Mahashivratri fast was completedThen Lord Shiva appeared and said -

👉 “O Chitrabhanu! You have observed my fast with true feelings even unknowingly.

All your sins have been destroyed.”
Lord Shiva blessed him with salvation.

Offer water, milk, ghee, honey and belpatra to Shivalinga.

🪔 Method of worship

• Take bath in the morning and wear clean clothes

• शिवलिंग पर जल, दूध, घी, शहद और बेलपत्र चढ़ाएँ

• Worship in all four hours

• “om namah shivaaya” mantra ka japa karen

• Keep vigil at night
