Dharmaraj Yudhishthir asked - "O Vasudev! What is the name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Shravan month? What is its method and what virtue is achieved by it? Please tell in detail."

Lord Shri Krishna said - "O Yudhishthir! In ancient times, King Dilip had asked the same question to Maharishi Vashishtha. I am telling you the answer that Sage Vashishtha gave him. The name of this Ekadashiis 'Kamika'."

1. Dispute between Brahmin and Kshatriya

In ancient times, there lived a very angry Kshatriya in a village. One day he had a dispute with a Brahmin over some issue. The dispute escalated so much that a scuffle broke out and the Brahmin was unknowingly killed by that Kshatriya.

2. Sin and Repentance of Brahmahatya

Because of killing a Brahmin, that Kshatriyaincurred the terrible sin of 'Brahmatya'. He was ostracized from the society. When he went to perform the last rites of the Brahmin, the learned Brahmins stopped him and saidβ€”"You are guilty of Brahmahatya, we will not accept anything offered by you."

The Kshatriya became very sad and went to a sage and prayed - "O sage! I have unknowingly committed a big sin. Tell me the way to get rid of this sin."

3. The ritual of Kamika Ekadashi

The sage said - "O Kshatriya! You observe the fast of 'Kamika Ekadashi'of the Krishna Paksha of Shravan monthand worship Lord Shridhar (Vishnu). With the effect of this fast, all your sins will be destroyed and you will be freed from the crime of Brahmahatya."

4. Darshan and salvation of Lord Vishnu

Kshatriya kept the fast of Kamika Ekadashi with full devotion as per the advice of the sage. He kept vigil near the idol of God at night. At midnight, Lord Vishnu appeared to him and said - "O Vatsa! I am extremely pleased with your devotion and the fast of this holy Ekadashi. You are now free from the sin of Brahmahatya."

The Kshatriya's life changed and he finally reached Vishnuloka.

After the completion of the fast, one day a prince came outside his house. Pleased with Sumedha's devotion, he donated her a grand palace, a lot of land and gold coins.
