Dharmaraj Yudhishthir said - "O Janardan! You cleared my doubt by telling me the importance of Bhadrapada Shukla 'Padma Ekadashi'. Now please tell me about Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi. What is its name and what is its method?"

Lord Shri Krishna said - "O Yudhishthir! The name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin monthis 'Indira Ekadashi'. It is going to save the ancestors from misery and send them to heaven. Just by listening to its story, all the sins of a person are erased. Listen carefully."

1. The glorious king Indrasen of Mahishmati city

In Satyayuga, there was a very prosperous city named 'Mahishmati'. Therea glorious king named Indrasenruled. He was a great devotee of Vishnu and looked after his subjects like a son. There was happiness and peace all around in his kingdom.

2. Arrival of Devarshi Narad and ancestral message

One day King Indrasen was sitting in his meeting, whenDevarshi Naradarrived there through the sky. The king gave him a seat of honor and worshiped him. Narad Muni said - "O King! I am coming from Yamalok. I saw your father there in the meeting of Yamraj."

The king was astonished and said, "O sage! My father was religious, then what is he doing in Yamraj's meeting?"

Narad ji said - "O king! Your father is in Yamalok due to breaking of his fast in his previous birth. He has sent a message for you. He has said - 'My son Indrasen is the king of Mahishmati. Tell him to observe a fast onIndira Ekadashifor my sake, so that with the influence of his virtue I can attain heaven'."
