1. Exclusive devotion of the Brahmin couple
With the desire to have a child, both of them started doing rigorous penance to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Seeing his selfless devotion, Mother Parvati was pleased and requested Lord Shiva to give her a son. Lord Shiva said - "O Goddess! He is not destined to have the happiness of a child, but your wish is supreme. I will give him darshan."
Lord Shiva appeared to the Brahmin in a dream and said - "O Brahmin! In the forest outside your city, there is an idol of mine buried under an old Bilva tree. You go there and worship it, your wish will be fulfilled."
2. Penance in the forest and snake bite
The very next day the Brahmin went to the forest and found that idol and started serving it. He did not return home for several days. One day when he was picking flowers for worship, he was bitten by a poisonoussnake. The Brahmin fell unconscious there.
On the other hand, the Brahmin at home became extremely distraught. She felt that some serious trouble had befallen her husband. She remembered Mother Gauri (Parvati) and headed towards the forest.

Mother Parvati said to the Brahmin - "O daughter! Do not be sad. Your husband has served me and Mahadev exclusively. You have also always followed the religion. I give life to your husband." The mother removed the poison from the Brahmin's body and he woke up alive.
4. Gauri Vrat's advice
Mother Parvati was pleased and advised her to observe a special fast. He said - "Any girl or womanwho will give up salt and worship me (Gauri) for five daysfrom Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi, will be blessed with unbroken good fortune and a worthy child."
