॥ Mythological story of Ganesh, the mouse vehicle. 🐘🐀

Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, despite having the head of a huge elephant, rides a small mouse. This paradox holds within itself a deep spiritual mystery and story. According to the scriptures, two main stories of obtaining the Mushak vehicle are prevalent:

Story 1: Gandharva Kraunch and the curse of the sage (The Cursed Gandharva)

In ancient times, there was a very beautiful and melodious Gandharva named 'Kranch' in the court of Devraj Indra. Once he was entering the meeting in a hurry and unknowingly his feet fell on the feet of the great asceticsage Vamdev.

The sage considered this act of Gandharva as an insult and in anger cursed him - "Oh arrogant Gandharva! You have disrespected me. Therefore, you immediately become a Mushak (rat), who always keeps destroying others' food and things by gnawing them."

Upon receiving the curse, Kraunch lost his divine form and turned into a huge, mountain-like rodent. But this was no ordinary mouse; Its body was as hard as a thunderbolt and its size was huge. That mouse escaped from the ashram of sage Vamadev and entered the ashram of Maharishi Parashar and started causing huge destruction there. He started gnawing and destroying the ashram's food stores, holy books and seats. The ashram residents became frightened.

Arrival of Lord Ganesha and control of the mouse:

At the same time, Lord Ganesha was residing in the ashram of sage Parashar in child form. Seeing the suffering of the ashram residents, he decided to tame that huge rodent. Lord Ganesha took out hisnooseand threw it towards that unruly mouse.

That noose tied the mouse from all sides and brought it to the feet of Lord Ganesha. Mouse realized his mistake and apologized to Lord Ganesha. Ganesha forgave him and said, "I am pleased with your devotion. I accept you as my vehicle, but you have to remain restrained."

From then on, that crow became the vehicle of Lord Ganesha in the Gandharva mouse form. Lord Ganesha made his load very light for the mouse so that he could carry it easily.

Story 2: Killing and restraining Mooshikasura (The Demon Mooshikasura)

According to the second story, in ancient timesthere was an extremely powerful and terrible demon named Mooshikasura. By doing rigorous penance from Lord Shiva, he had obtained the boon that no god or weapon would be able to kill him.

Being blinded by the boon, Mushikasura started creating terror in all the three worlds. He took over the heaven and started destroying the ashrams of the sages. Saddened by his terror, all the gods reached Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva asked him to take refuge in Lord Ganesha.

Ganesh ji challenged Mushikasura to a fight. There was a fierce war between the two. Mushikasura changed many forms, but he could not stand before the power of Lord Ganesha. At last, Lord Ganesha subdued him and accepted him as his vehicle. In this way Lord Ganesha destroyed the ego of that demon and controlled him and used him in his religious activities.
