Story begins:
In ancient times, there was a city named 'Vaidish', where Chandravanshi king 'Chaitrarath' ruled. All the residents of that city were devotees of Vishnu and no one was poor or a sinner. The king himself was a very religious person. Once 'Amalaki Ekadashi' of Phalgun Shukla Paksha came. The king and the people all went under a huge Amla tree situated on the banks of the river and worshiped Lord Vishnu.
Everyone kept vigil throughout the night and sang hymns of God. At the same time a very hungry and thirsty hunter (fowler) reached there. He used to commit sinful acts (hunting) to feed his family. Hiding behind the temple, he silently started watching the worship and vigil of Ekadashi. Despite being distraught with hunger, he remained awake the whole night and unknowingly he completed the fast and vigil of Ekadashi.
1. Rebirth of the hunter
After some time the hunter died. Due to the effect of Amalaki Ekadashi fast observed unknowingly, he was born in the next life in the house of King 'Viduratha' of 'Jayanti' city. He was named 'Vasurath'. He became a very brave, religious and people-loving king.
2. Protection by Divine Power
Once King Vasuratha lost his way while hunting in the forest and slept under a tree. At the same time some bandits and enemies surrounded them. The enemies thought that this was the king who had killed our relatives, so he should be killed. They started attacking the king with weapons.
But, as soon as those weapons reached the king's body, they turned into a shower of flowers. Then a very divine and stunning woman appeared from the king's body. That goddess got angry and killed all those enemies in a moment.
3. Realizing the glory of fasting
When the king woke up, he saw that all his enemies were lying dead. They were astonished as to who protected them. Then a voice came from the sky - "O King! You have been protected by the power of Lord Vishnu himself. The fast and vigil on 'Amalaki Ekadashi' that you unknowingly observed in your previous birth is the result of that virtue." King Vasuratha was very happy to know this and returned to his kingdom and started fasting on Ekadashi throughout his life.
